Coastal Connection: New Friends and a Full Moon Swim

Women in the Water’s July Newsletter!

Words By Lindsey Geier and Lyndsey Kenefick

Not everyone may know this feeling, and that’s okay. This feeling only came about circumstantially. This feeling may be exhilarating to some and terrifying to others. What is this feeling I’m referring to? It’s hard to name it, but you know it when you feel it. I will call it the “new kid in school” feeling.

A Sense of Belonging

This feeling can visit us at any time in our lives. It could be when you move to a new town, start a new job, attend a party you’re invited to, or attend one of our WITW monthly events. As a team, we know this feeling and are here to help you through it.

Our July event aimed to harness that community aspect. We had a beach potluck with some sand games and a Full Moon swim led by WITW community member Caitlin Swalec.

A key component of producing these monthly events is helping anyone in this area overcome that “new kid in school” feeling. And... We saw that play out in this event!

A few women announced it was their first time coming to one of our events, and those same women also came by themselves. Some shared it was their first time joining an ocean swim, something we host weekly (you can find out more info through our WhatsApp group). For some, it was their second time attending, but they brought along a friend. And some were more than familiar faces we could catch up with. For every single person who is able to show up, we are stoked to have you. Because with an ever-growing world of screens and comfort zones, you all decided to step outside of that and join us.

With that, a high five and a big hug. Everyone is welcome.

Each event has an intention behind it that reflects our mission statement. Our mission is to provide a platform for womxn to educate, inspire, champion inclusivity, and actively participate in ocean stewardship activities.

Our August event is a “MUST GO!” if you want to learn or improve your surfing. All levels are welcome! Keep reading to learn more!
